A day in a Titicaca community — what one truly experiences there

Travel Story—9 janvier 2026—3 min read

A day with a Lake Titicaca community: welcome, gestures, transmissions. The experiences of Terralba, a agency in Peru since 2024.

Lake Titicaca rarely reveals itself in a single visit. A quick crossing of the floating islands of the Uros, from Puno, offers only a glimpse. It is on the less-traveled shores, and among the communities that have inhabited them for centuries, that the lake regains its depth.

The arrival

One reaches the Capachica peninsula after a two-hour drive from Puno, then walks up to the house awaiting us. The altitude — nearly four thousand meters — dictates its rhythm. The host, a Quechua farmer, takes the time for the kintu : three coca leaves offered to Pachamama before any meal.

The day's gestures

The morning is divided between the tasks that structure community life : sheepfold, garden, loom. The transmission is far from folkloric : the traveler learns, clumsily, to spin alpaca wool ; the elder, patiently, shows a second time.

Lunch — a pachamanca cooked under heated stones — gathers the extended family around a tablecloth spread directly on the earth. A few Quechua words are enough to elicit a smile.

The afternoon on the lake

The traditional sailing boat glides along the coast towards Llachón. The lake is a mineral blue, without a ripple. On the horizon, Bolivia's Cordillera Real : three white peaks that do not move. There is no need to say more.

The evening

The sky darkens without transition. The night, at this altitude, possesses a disarming clarity. One sleeps in a simple, clean room, under thick wool blankets. And one understands, in this silence, that one came seeking something other than a site to see : a rhythm to learn.

This day is part of several of our itineraries. It is always experienced in a small group, with a family we have known for years — the condition for an encounter that is not a performance.
